Can I clean my dryer vent myself?

Updated: Sep 12

What tools are needed to clean the dryer vent?

  1. Dryer vent cleaning kit. A dryer vent cleaning kit cost is approximately $40 and comes with a round dryer vent cleaning brush and approximately 12 feet of extensions. Most vents are 10 feet or longer so you most likely need additional extensions to clean the entire length of the vent. When cleaning your dryer vent you want to make sure that you clean it from the outside vent cover all the way to the dryer. If you don’t clean the entire length you could make the clog worse by compacting the lint.

  2. Drill to use with the dryer vent cleaning kit.

  3. Shop vacuum to catch the flying dust and to clean up the lint when you’re finished.

  4. Ladder if your vent is more than 6 feet off the ground or on the roof.

  5. Various screw drivers and hex head drivers to remove the outside vent cover, hose clamps and to take the lint trap inside the dryer apart.

  6. Replacement vent pipes and vent sealing foil tape for any repairs that might be needed. Duct tape is not safe for use on a dryer vent because it is flammable.
